According to the data shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), there has been a continuous rise in the number of employees testing positive for the coronavirus. The data further shows that around 70 employees of the civic body have succumbed to the infection after contracting the coronavirus.

As per sources, the number could further increase as many departments are yet to report their data to the civic general administration department. The civic body has been actively trying to contain the spread of the coronavirus which has resulted in a lot of their staffers to contract COVID-19 in the process. In the past, the deputy commissioner of the BMC, Shirish Dixit, succumbed to the coronavirus. The official was initially asymptomatic. However, his health gradually deteriorated. The family members of Dixit informed the authorities of the same and as a team of officers reached his residence, he was pronounced dead.

Maharashtra, which has the highest number of coronavirus in the country has found its hotbed in Mumbai, which has emerged as the epicentre of infection in India. The BMC had earlier made it mandatory for all the employees to report to work. The civic body was working at 50 per cent strength before as per the government guidelines. However, differently-abled staffers and those over the age of 55 with co-morbidities have been exempted from the field duties.

In the past, the BMC had directed all assistant commissioners to book hotel rooms for employees engaged in providing essential services. The civic body has formulated room tariffs to be adhered to while booking hotel rooms. Taj group of hotels had agreed to keep the employees of the BMC at Taj Mahal Palace at Rs. 2,000 per room which would include meals and laundry service. The decision has been taken as most employees live in the suburbs and struggle to commute to work. Furthermore, this is said to safeguard the health of those working in strenuous circumstances along with their family members.
