Amid concerns of the new COVID-19 variant, Omicron, the World Health Organization (WHO) has reportedly spoken about the efficacy of the prevalent vaccines against the new strain.

According to reports, a top WHO official told the AFP news agency on Tuesday, December 7, that there isn’t any reason to make an assumption that the Omicron is more severe than the variants before it or that the present vaccines will fail against it.

The WHO’s emergencies director, Michael Ryan in an interview with AFP elaborated that presently, there are no indications that Omicron, whilst highly infectious can cause more severe disease than the earlier variants such as Delta.

He added that the present vaccines could protect individuals who contract Omicron in the worst outcome of the disease. Ryan further elucidated that the present vaccines are highly effective and have proved efficient against all variants so far.

This according to him is in terms of severe disease and hospitalization, thus there isn’t any reason to anticipate that it wouldn’t be so for the Omicron. However, he added that further research was required into the variant, to adequately understand how threatening it could be.
