The cyclonic storm Nisarga spared the city of Mumbai, which is considered to be the financial capital of India. Mumbai was already grappling with the ongoing coronavirus crisis when it received the tropical storm on Wednesday.

Mumbai so far has not reported any major loss to life and property. However, strong and blustering winds have uprooted several trees across the city, mostly in DN Road Fort, Colaba, King Circle, and Mulund, as per civic officials. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has received 39 tree-fall complaints from the city, 40 from its eastern suburbs, and 38 from the western. Moreover, nine complaints of wall collapse and 20 short-circuit incidents were also reported.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar as the tropical storm was the first to hit the west coast in June in many years. Nisarga had made landfall in Raigad district with wind speeds of 120 kmph on Wednesday. Since then the city has been receiving extremely heavy rain at isolated places.

On Wednesday, the maximum wind speed recorded at landfall which was around 12.30 pm by the Colaba observatory was 49.95 kmph and the Santacruz observatory at 22.2 kmph. Between 8.30 am and 5.30 pm, the Colaba observatory recorded 46.7 mm rainfall, while its Santacruz counterpart recorded 22.8 mm rain. While de-watering pumps were also arranged at more than 300 potential waterlogging sites, no such complaints were reported during the day. The BMC had also conducted evacuations. The evacuees were further checked for fever and oxygen levels. Those found with suspected COVID-19 symptoms were later shifted to care centres.

Meanwhile, The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had deployed eight units and the Navy had deployed five units at various locations in the city in the wake of the cyclone. One NDRF team each was stationed at Colaba (Ward A), Worli (G-South), Bandra (H-East), Malad (P-South) & Borivali (R-North) and three teams at Andheri (K-West).
