In recent developments, Navi Mumbai’s civic body, the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) has started an innovative project called 'Zero Waste Model' for waste disposal in slums and villages.

Through this innovative initiative, women who collect garbage and contribute financially to their families have got the right to regular employment. This is a positive step taken by NMMC towards women empowerment as well as proper disposal of waste as per rules.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) has been signed with the Women's Liberation Organization (WMO) with regards to the same. Meanwhile, garbage collectors are collecting wet and dry waste from households in villages and slums. According to sources, the women collect garbage from 7 am. Moreover, one woman reportedly collects garbage from 250 houses from 9 am to 9.30 am.

These bins are equipped with wheels so that the women garbage collectors can easily transport the collected waste. The collected wet waste is brought to the site of compost peat in a shed constructed at a place in the settlement and is composted. Post this, the dry waste is sold to the scavengers and through these scavengers, they receive money for subsistence.

Currently, action has been initiated at Hanuman Nagar and Indiranagar slums in Turbhe division, Advali Bhutavaligaon in Koparkhairane division, Samtanagar in Airoli division and it is getting good response from the residents. On the other hand, the zero-waste project is being started in Bindumadhav Nagar and Ganeshnagar in Digha division in a few days. Moreover, this plan is touted to be implemented in other villages and slums as well.
