Traveling between Panvel and Karjat will now become quite easy for passengers. Under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3), from Panvel to Karjat, a 29.6 km long corridor is being constructed. The new route of this railway line will greatly relieve passengers in nearby areas of Mumbai. This route will have a tunnel built through it. The longest tunnel on the Mumbai Suburban Railway line known as Waverley, will be built on this railway line.

The new railway line will benefit passengers as it will reduce the distance between Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Karjat. On this new railway line, five stations are being constructed. The names of the stations are Panvel, Mahape, Chikle, Chowk, and Karjat. The total length of the railway line is 30 km. Three tunnels, two rail flyovers, 44 major and minor bridges, 15 road-under bridges, and seven road-over bridges make up the entirety of the line.

Additionally, after this project is completed, the congestion between Thane and Kalyan stations will be significantly reduced. Due to this, there is a possibility of a reduction in crowds.

The entire cost of MUTP-3 is estimated to be INR 10,947 crores. In 2016, this project received approval. Thus, it is expected that this route will become accessible for passengers by March 2025.

The construction work of Waverley commenced in February, this year. In seven months, they have completed the drilling work of one section of the tunnel.

All three tunnels - the Wavrely tunnel (2.6 km), Kirawali tunnel (300 m), and Nadhal tunnel (219 m) - are currently being built on the 3,144-meter-long railway line. According to a Mumbai Rail Vikas Corporation official, the major issue in digging this tunnel, which is extremely close to the Panvel-Karjat single line's current tunnel, is that work must be done under far tougher safety limitations. The three tunnels will have ballast-less tracks and sufficient public refuge places, as well as tunnel control, lighting, and ventilation equipment.

Work on the tunnel's waterproofing and corrosion protection is now in progress. For this new railway line, construction is already underway on 56.87 hectares of private land. Government land of 4.4 hectares and forest department land measuring 9.13 hectares have both been allocated. For this railway line, the land of Barwai, Wavarle, Belwali, Bhingar, Lodhiwali, Kirwali, and Wanjale areas has been acquired.

Mumbai is about to acquire another suburban rail corridor with the start of construction on the Panvel-Karjat rail line, which will connect Navi Mumbai with the Raigad district of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR). The public does not yet have full access to the fourth corridor on the Nerul/Belapur-Kharkopar-Uran line, which was finished in November 2018.

The new route is a component of the railway's efforts to access underserved MMR areas. A few long-distance passenger trains operate on the old line's current cargo service. Local trains will be able to travel between Mumbai and Karjat through Panvel thanks to the new double-line corridor. Additionally, it will act as a spur for growth in the rapidly growing cities of Panvel, Karjat, and the projected Navi Mumbai Airport Influence Notified Area.
