Footpaths, which are around a 90-km stretch in the island city, including central Mumbai, will be beautified according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC)'s plan.

Paver blocks will be removed to make way for the cement concrete surface of the pavements, as per BMC's plan. Reportedly, for the project, footpaths at 33 locations in the island city and central Mumbai have been identified to beautify them. The footpaths at Dadar, Churchgate, Marines Lines, Colaba, Kemps Corner, Walkeshwar are also included.

The BMC has faced criticism due to the paver block surfaces on these footpaths. Under this project, the road surface would be made of cement, and they will take necessary measures to make it convenient for the disabled citizens.

According to the reports, the cumulative cost for the project is around ₹50 crores. On Thursday, October 7, the BMC floated bids for contractors while the last day to submit is October 28.

In September, BMC had passed a proposal of ₹69 crores, as per reports. Under that project, they were to beautify the footpaths at Lady Jehangir Marg from St Joseph Circle near Wadala station to Ruia College; Maharshi Dayanand Saraswati Marg from Diamond Garden to Chembur railway station, etc. BJP corporator and group leader in BMC, Prakash Shinde, had opposed this BMC's project.

Shinde said that if BMC is wanting to beautify footpaths they shouldn't choose a location rather do it across the city. He also opposed appointing consultants for the design of these footpaths when they already have in-house engineers. He added that the civic body is not spending money wisely.
