The BMC education committee has decided to build 17 sports centres on the civic school playgrounds by laying out synthetic turf which will help students to play cricket, football, basketball, kabaddi and Kho- Kho in pro style.
BMC’s education department has a physical education department, which has other 17 different sub-departments under its ambit, which organises various sports competitions, sports demonstrations with the help of required equipment. In the last financial year, 37 students had participated in the state level competition and six students had participated on a national level.
Corporators requested the state to hand over the ground for corporate matches. For now, the state has kept mum on this request. BMC will build six sports centres in the first phase and remaining sports centres in next phase said Milind Sawant, deputy commissioner, education department.
Last year, Congress former corporator Faiyyaz Ahmed was the one who demanded the civic playgrounds to be covered in synthetic turf and also demanded to rent out these grounds to private institutions.
