Since the Kanjurmarg plot is undergoing litigation, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray asked Metro officials to consider the option of establishing a car depot for the Metro 3 underground corridor (Colaba - Bandra - Seepz) and Metro 6 (Vikhroli - Lokhandwala) at Goregaon Pahadi.

CM Thackeray chaired a review meeting on June 12 to get a clearer picture of the pace of the city’s Metro projects. “The CM wants other options to be on the table as Kanjurmarg land is not readily available. For Metro 4 (Wadala-Thane) too other options for a depot will be explored,” an official from the state government said.

Thackeray also asked the Urban Development Department to produce a summary of the increased cost of Metro 3 for further approvals. This comes as the project cost has escalated from ₹23,136 crore to ₹33,406 crores.

The state wants to reserve 89 hectares (ha) from 129.10 ha belonging to a no-development zone (NDZ) Goregaon Pahadi for the metro shed. The remaining 40 ha was to be handed over for the setting up of the Maharashtra National Law University. Keeping this in mind, arrangements have been made to convert the NDZ to a residential zone.

Kanjurmarg was chosen as the alternative last year after the state government halted works at the Aarey site. However, on December 16, 2020, the Bombay High Court stayed the District Collector’s order that reserved 102 acres of salt pan land at Kanjurmarg. This particular stay is yet to be vacated, which meant that the government had to consider another alternative.
