After several delays, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) finally decided to complete the work on one arm of Delisle bridge in Lower Parel and open it for motorists by first week of May. Meanwhile, the civic body is aiming to open the entire bridge by June 30.

The west arm of the bridge, which BMC plans to open first, is the one that will connect GK Marg with NM Joshi Marg.

However, the BMC had earlier set a target to reopen the bridge by May 31.

A civic official stated that there have been problems at the ready-mix concrete (RMC) plant in Navi Mumbai from where gravel comes for construction work. For the last 15 days they haven't been getting gravel for concreting work required to be done at the site. The required quantity has started coming in only since Monday, April 17. But this too is not as much as is needed to do the work speedily. Besides, there was also a shortage of water tankers a few days ago, which again hit the progress of work.

Therefore, considering the brief history of delays, oppositions have alleged that it is unlikely that work on the bridge will be completed within these deadlines.

In a veiled attack, the Shiv Sena leader and MLA of Worli constituency, where the bridge is located, Aaditya Thackeray tweeted: "It's shocking to hear that most road and bridge works across Mumbai are virtually shut due to the lack of gravel supply from regular suppliers for over two weeks."

Besides, this, on Tuesday, April 18, a meeting was held with the Municipal Deputy Commissioner at the G South Ward Office regarding the issue of the residents of GK Marg in Worli. MLAs Sunil Shinde, Snehal Ambekar Tai, Arvind Bhosle, Branch Head Vijay Bhange, Deepak Bagwe and other colleagues were present in the meeting.

It is pertinent to note that since nearly five years since Delisle bridge was shut for traffic after it was found to be unsafe.
