The work of the Goregaon-Mulund Expressway project, which has been stalled for the last four to five years, has picked up speed and the work of twin subways passing under the Sanjay Gandhi National Park has started. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will now appoint a project management consultant to oversee this work. Under this project, a twin subway line will be constructed from Chitranagari in Goregaon to Khindipada in Mulund in the eastern suburbs.

Santacruz – Chembur, Andheri – Ghatkopar, Jogeshwari – Vikhroli are the three connecting roads connecting the eastern and western suburbs of Mumbai. But due to increasing population and traffic in both the suburbs, the capacity of these roads has been exhausted. Therefore, the municipality has taken up the work of constructing a fourth alternative road.

The Goregaon-Mulund link road project has been undertaken by the Mumbai Municipal Corporation to connect the western and eastern suburbs. Due to this road of about 12.20 km length, it will be possible to reach Goregaon – Mulund distance in a very short time. This very complex project has been arranged in four phases. Under the third phase, a twin and subway line will be constructed between Chitranagari in Goregaon and eastern suburbs up to Khindipada in Mulund. International tenders were invited for these twin tunnels with three lanes each. The contractor has been selected after the tender process. The construction of the entire subway has to be completed in a total of 60 months. The municipal administration has now decided to appoint a Project Management Consultant (PMC) to supervise this work and has invited tenders for the same.

There are going to be many challenges such as practical difficulties while digging the subway, geological challenges, installation of water channels under the tunnel road, and other utility channels. Also, since this subway is near the Sanjay Gandhi National Park, explosives cannot be used for this, instead, this route will be excavated through a modern Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM).

The twin parallel subways are 4.70 km in diameter each. It will have an internal diameter of 13 metres in the Sanjay Gandhi National Sanctuary area. The tunnel will be dug from a depth of 20 to 160 metres under the sanctuary hill. Capital expenditure will be saved as no land acquisition will have to be done for this route passing under Aarey and National Park.
