The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has almost concluded the works on the expansion of the Kopri Bridge. This bridge connects Mumbai to Thane and could likely be opened for the general public within the next two weeks. Works on the bridge were undertaken due to its bleak condition.

This project was undertaken at a cost of ₹250 crores which involved turning the 4 lane road into an 8 lane road. The bridge usually witnesses some traffic as it accommodates vehicles travelling from Mumbai to Northern Maharashtra, Thane City, or Kalyan-Dombivli.

Following the completion of the new stretch of road, officials are likely to remove the older part of the bridge and build a new one.

Thane’s Deputy Commissioner of Police Traffic, Balasaheb Patil said, “After the new flyover is inaugurated, the existing one will be rebuilt and the flow of traffic will be smooth. The IIT-Bombay has already given a report that the existing bridge is very weak and needs to be pulled down. I was told that the old bridge will be rebuilt by February 2022.”

“It will ease traffic to Thane city and other places and also ease traffic to the Thane Railway Station. It will be opened in some time and some issues need to be sorted out,” MMRDA Commissioner, S.V.R. Srinivas said while speaking to the Indian Express.
