The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has commenced demolishing one of the 42 buildings at the Bombay Development Directorate (BDD) Chawl in Dadar’s Naigaon to commence the redevelopment project, reports stated.

According to reports, state housing minister Jitendra Awhad was present during the demolition. He elaborated on how the demolition work of building number 5B began on Tuesday, January 4. With this, he added that the construction of the new building on the premises will begin soon after the demolition is finished.

Awhad further elucidated on how this was the largest and most ambitious redevelopment project undertaken by the state government. He offered reassurance that the work will be completed soon.

Based on accounts, officials have claimed that the redevelopment project will be undertaken in two phases. During the first phase, in Plot B, 23 buildings will be redeveloped. The rest of the 19 in Plot A will be worked on during the second phase.

It is reported that an aggregate of 3,344 residents resides in the 42 ground-plus-three-floor building. In accordance with the proposed redevelopment which has been approved by the planning authority cell of the MHADA, three basement-plus-stilt-plus-22-storey buildings will be built to rehabilitate the residents.
