Under the "Safer Access to Schools" project, a road in Mumbai's Byculla that hosts two schools was declared "safer" during a dry run undertaken in October 2021 by children and other road users who were part of the survey, reported the Times of India.
According to the report, the survey was undertaken on Mirza Ghalib Road that is home to Christ Church School and St Agnes High School. The aim is to create child-friendly and walkable school zones across the island city.
Based on the account, a survey to understand the impact of the trial brought to light that nearly 93 per cent children felt that the road was more accessible during the trial. On the other hand, all of the children that is 100 per cent felt that the road was safe during the trial.
In aggregate, 120 people were interviewed that entailed 40 children, 40 pedestrians, 20 bus operators and 20 motorists prior to and during the trial. It has been reported that the survey was undertaken for a duration of three weeks in October.
A part of the trail was also design solutions that comprised demarcating the school zone with signs, road markings, designated areas to walk and wait, pick-up and drop-off zones, as well as, child-friendly spaces.
The narrative mentioned that the trail was commenced by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), World Resources Institute (WRI) India and the traffic police under the Bloomberg Philanthropies Imitative for Global Road Safety.
