According to a latest development, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) on Thursday, April 14, said that the tunnel work below Sanjay Gandhi National Park (SGNP) for civic body’s ambitious Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) project will only start from February next year, 2023. Earlier, it was reported that the twin tunnel work was to begin by mid-2022.

Though the work on two flyovers being constructed as part of the GMLR has been kicked off in the last month, the road will open for traffic only by December 2026. As the tunnel work is likely to be completed by 2025, said officials.

The tunnels are expected to be 4.7 km long and around 25 to 200 metres below the ground.

On the same day, Mumbai suburban Guardian Minister Aaditya Thackeray performed the ground-breaking ceremony in Goregaon for the same project.

Sharing the details of the project via a video, Thackeray tweeted, “Following the bhumi pujan of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (flyover) on the Mulund end last month, today laid the foundation for the flyover at the Goregaon end."

GMLR is going to transform the way Mumbai travels entirely, and the civic body is committed to its on-time completion, said BMC official. With this project, the BMC plans a 12.2-km GMLR to ease traffic on Mumbai’s east-west connectors.

According to officials, currently travelling between Goregaon and Mulund via the existing road of GMLR, takes around 80 minutes during peak traffic time. This will bring down the travel time to 20 minutes.

As per a new report, the cost estimate of the Goregaon-Mulund Link Road (GMLR) has gone up by ₹1,500 crores. This is raising quite a few eyebrows considering the fact that work on this project is yet to begin.

The GMLR project is conducted by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which mentioned an estimate of ₹4,770 crores back in April last year. This is when the civic body sent out tenders for the design and construction of twin tunnels along with approach roads. But as of the most recent estimate, the cost has risen to ₹6,225 crores.
