Metro-3 Car shed: Contempt Petition filed with National Green Tribunal against MMRC

The Vanashakti organisation filed a contempt petition in National Green Tribunal (NGT) against Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC) on Friday, September 14, for violating NGT’s decision - to stop the metro car shed construction under Metro-3 project. Petitioner Stalin Dayanand told Mumbai Live that in the petition, he has demanded strong action to be taken against concerned officials.

MMRC was given clear instructions that the construction of car shed in Aarey Colony shall be stopped. However, MMRC has been constructing the same illegally violating the tribunal’s decision,” informed Stalin Dayanand.


Petitioners and Aarey residents have complaint multiple times against the “illegal” construction. However, the police have not taken any action regarding the same and they were told to file a contempt petition with NGT.

Many other petitions have been filed before, in Bombay High Court, regarding land acquisition - under this project - of the Adivasis living in Aarey Colony. Thus, environmental NGOs including Save Aarey, Save Tree, Vanashakti have been protesting against the same and reached NGT to stop the construction work for the car shed. However, MMRC has been constantly violating NGT’s and Bombay HC’s order.

Petitioner Ashabai Bhai informed Mumbai Live that MMRC has shut down the only way of commuting to the city from the Adivasi ‘padas’.  The petition states that the construction for the Metro-3 car shed is directly affecting the livelihood of Adivasis living in Aarey.
