Mumbai - Balipratipada falls on Kartik Shukl Pratipada. This year, it is on 31 October, Monday, which will mark the beginning of the Vikram Samvat 2073 Kilaknaam Samvatsar. The day is also called Diwali Padwa. Balipratipada is considered as one of the three-and-a-half auspicious Muhurta days. On this day, the bond of love between husband and wife strengthens. Traders and businessmen start writing transactions in new books. In Maharashtra, people eat sweets together at temples and this ritual is being observed for hundreds of years. Relatives are offered sweets and given wishes for the new year on this day. Even there is a tradition of buying salt on the morning of this day. A story regarding Balipratipada states that Bali was an Asura King who had become proud of his position. To punish him for his actions, Bhagwan Vishnu took the avatar (incarnation) of Waman and sent King Bali into the hell by keeping a leg on his head.
