Bhaidooj celebrates sibling love

SHARES

Mumbai – Celebrated on the second day after the new moon in the month of Kartik, Bhaidooj is an important part of the Diwali celebrations. Also known as the Yam Dwitiya, the day holds special significance for siblings. Ritual dictates that sisters apply the symbolic vermilion tika on brothers' foreheads and wish him a bright future. According to one myth, Lord Yama gave 'darshan' to his sister Yami on this day.

Bhaidooj has since become an expression of a sister’s love for her brother and his well-being. The deep (lamp) lighted during Diwali festivities is a symbol of light winning over darkness. It is also a source of internal energy.
