The Santaji Ghorpade Sugar Factory Scam

The Santaji Ghorpade sugar factory scam involves the transfer of 158 crores from bogus companies in Kolkata to the factory. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had alleged that this was money laundering and demanded action against Mushrif. Following this, the Income Tax Department and ED initiated action against Mushrif.

Raids Conducted by ED on Political Figures in Maharashtra

It is important to note that this is not the first instance of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducting raids on political figures in Maharashtra. In recent past, the ED has conducted several such raids on leaders from different political parties.

In November 2020, the ED had conducted raids on the premises of Shiv Sena MLA Pratap Sarnaik and his associates in connection with a money laundering case. In the same month, the ED had also conducted raids on the premises of Maharashtra Minister Anil Deshmukh's aides in connection with a money laundering case.

Political Fallout of the Raids

These raids have caused a stir in the political circles of Maharashtra and have raised concerns about the involvement of political figures in such cases. The ED's actions have also been criticized by some political parties who have accused the agency of carrying out a witch-hunt against their leaders.
