In the wake of coronavirus, the Maharashtra budget session has been cut short by a week and will conclude on March 14. The state budget will be passed in the assembly on Saturday along with the Appropriation bill.

As this happened, the legislators are in process of winding up the legislative work. On Thursday, the Maharashtra assembly passed legislation which will increase the allowances of the MLAs by ₹15,000.

While speaking in the legislative assembly, Maharashtra Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anil Parab introduced a proposal for an amendment to state Legislature Members’ Salaries and Allowances Act. The proposal aimed to increase the monthly allowance of legislators by ₹15,000.

This hike in the allowances for the MLAs aims to permit all legislators in Maharashtra legislature to avail the service of a driver without any cost.

The Maharashtra Legislature Members’ Salaries and Allowances Act provides salaries and allowances of the members of the Maharashtra legislature (Assembly and Council). The act also provides for other matters including amenities to the legislators.

Anil Parab in the assembly said that the Maharashtra Legislature Members’ Salaries and Allowances Act doesn’t provide for services of a driver to the MLAs.

After considering the demand to allow the facility of a driver as an allowance, the government will make a provision that every member of the state legislature shall be entitled to free of charge driver service.

Anil Parab spoke in detail regarding the legislation to increase the allowance of the MLAs by ₹15,000. The same amount will be paid as a fixed salary to the driver at present.

This decision will put a burden on the state exchequer by additional ₹6.60 crores per year. The bill was passed without any discussion. Currently, MLAs draw a total salary and allowances of ₹2.31 lakh a month.
