Days ahead of the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) elections, the former standing committee member and Vashi corporator from ward Divya Gaikwad on Tuesday, January 5, formally left the Bhartiya Janata Party and joined the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) along with Vaibhav Gaikwad, who was also the corporator from the same ward in 2010.

Within a week, four former corporators who had earlier defected to Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) have now left the party. While three of them -- Navin Gwate, Aparna Gwate and Deepa Gwate -- have joined the Shiv Sena last week, Ganesh Naik, joined NCP on Tuesday.

Divya and Vaibhav Gaikwad along with Naik met with NCP President Shard Pawar on Tuesday, January 5, and showed their solidarity with the party. Divya Gaikwad was elected as a corporator from Ward No. 64. Divya Gaikwad was known to be staunch supporters of Ganesh Naik. Gaikwad had joined the BJP along with Ganesh Naik.

The political experts said that they are expecting many more 'jumps' in the coming days, as the Maha Vikas Aghadi (the coalition of Shiv Sena, NCP and Congress) is trying to gain full power in the civic body, in order to take control of Navi Mumbai city.

In September 2019, a total of 55 corporators from NCP had supported Ganesh Naik who had defected to the BJP along with his son Sandip Naik. While most of the NCP corporators did not resign from the party, they reportedly supported Naik in all civic committees’ decision at NMMC.
