The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Maharashtra recently staged a statewide agitation against the state government demanding to allow the reopening of temples. The protests were held in Pune, Thane and Palghar districts. 

The BJP workers, corporators, MLAs and office-bearers including Chandrakant Patil participated in the ‘ghantanand andolan’ or bell-ringing agitation. They gathered outsides temples across Maharashtra and chanted hymns demanding the state government to open temples. 

The saffron party has also warned the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) that the BJP will forcibly reopen all the temples if the government doesn’t provide permission. 

Maharashtra BJP President Chandrakant Patil said that the protest was necessary to give a message to the Maharashtra government to reopen the temples. He informed that the agitation was held outside 10,000 temples across the state. 

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra Legislative Assembly, Devendra Fadnavis said that the reopening of temples in the state is a matter of faith and is also linked to the livelihood of the poor. The livelihood of many people in the vicinity of the shrines and major pilgrimage depends only on the temples.

Fadnavis also pointed out that the liquor shops, shopping malls, markets have been allowed to function. He asked, “why was the Maharashtra government against reopening of temples?”

The opposition in Maharashtra has united against the Uddhav Thackeray government to demand the reopening of all places of worship. With BJP demanding the reopening of temples, AIMIM MP from Aurangabad Imtiyaz Jaleel said that he will open mosques on September 2 even if the move was against the ruled imposed by the state.
