In a significant development, the two-member cabinet of Eknath Shinde-Devendra Fadnavis government has reversed the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA)’s decision on delimitation of wards last year, which aimed at increasing the number of councilors to 236.

With this, the number of electoral wards in the BMC has been brought down again to 227 instead of 236 for the forthcoming elections. According to reports, the BMC elections will be conducted in October.

Experts have stated that the decision is likely to harm the Sena in the coming BMC polls as the delimitation of wards was said to be in favour of the ruling Shiv Sena.

The delimitation draft was issued on February 1, 2022, which received negative reactions from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress.

For those unversed, the minimum and maximum number of seats for other local bodies too will be based on the census. For population above 12 lakhs and upto 24 lakhs, the minimum number of councillors will be 115 and maximum of 151. For population above 24 lakhs and upto 30 lakhs, the minimum number of councillors will be 161 and a maximum 175.
