Bollywood-actress-turned politician Urmila Matondkar has refused to participate in the election campaign for Congress in the assembly elections in Maharashtra which are scheduled on October 21

Matondkar, who was a star campaigner for 2019 Lok Sabha elections, had earlier resigned from Congress citing “petty internal politics” in the party’s Mumbai unit.

Congress fielded Matondkar from Mumbai North constituency for the 2019 general elections against senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Gopal Shetty. However, Matondkar had to face defeat.

The election campaigns are in full swing in Maharashtra ahead of the assembly polls. Meanwhile, the condition of Congress in the state is unstable given that several leaders have left the party while it struggles with internal conflicts.

With Matondkar’s decision to stay away from the election campaign, Congress seems to have lost a popular face, at least in Mumbai.

According to sources, Mumbai Congress President Eknath Gaikwad contacted Urmila Matondkar to campaign for the party. However, Matondkar refused the offer.
