Bombay High Court on Monday cancelled the atrocity charges against Maharashtra Swabiman Paksha (MSP) chief Narayan Rane including his close aide Ravi Shendge, and Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Bala Nandgaonkar.

Earlier in June 2002, in order to topple the then Vilasrao Deshmukh-led government from power, the opposition alliance tried its best to bring a no-confidence motion in Maharashtra Assembly.

In order to gain the no-confidence motion against Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) government in the state, Rane along with Nandgaonkar, and Shendge allegedly abducted the then NCP MLA Padmakar Valvi.

However, on June 13, the Deshmukh-led government won the vote of confidence. Rane, Nandgaon, and Shendge were in Shiv Sena at that time. Later, Rane left Shiv Sena and Nandgaon joined Raj Thackeray-led MNS.

Valvi had alleged he was kept in Matoshree Sports club from June 5 to June 12, 2002, where he was forced to write a letter to the governor withdrawing his support from the Deshmukh-led front and extending the same to BJP-Shiv Sena alliance.

Earlier, the trio had approached Bombay HC seeking the removal of atrocity charges against them on the grounds that Nandgaonkar and Shandge belonged to Scheduled Caste.
