Congress veteran Gurudas Kamat, 63, on Wednesday morning passed away in New Delhi. He was rushed to Chanakyapuri’s Primus Hospital in the national capital after a heart attack.
Kamat served as the general secretary of All India Congress Committee and also as an active member of Congress Working Committee. Till 2014, Kamat remained an MP from North West Mumbai and was elected as an MP from Mumbai's North East constituency in 1984, 1991, 1998 and 2004. However, he had to face a defeat in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections.
Congress entrusted Kamat with the charge of states including Gujarat, Rajasthan, Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Daman and Diu. However, in 2017, Kamat resigned from all the posts.
The Congress veteran was a lawyer by profession and he graduated from R.A. Poddar College in Mumbai. During the Manmohan Singh government, between 2009 and 2011, Kamat served as Minister of State (MoS) for Home Affairs and Minister of Communications and Information Technology.
According to the reports, the dead body of the senior leader may reach Mumbai by 5:00 in the evening and the funeral will be held tomorrow.
