Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday met Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari claiming that there was an undeclared emergency in the state.

Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis led a delegation to meet the Governor at Raj Bhavan and said that journalists were being terrorised by the Uddhav Thackeray government in the state.

Highlighting the arrest of ABP Majha journalist Rahul Kulkarni in connection with the crowd gathering of migrant workers and labourers in Bandra, Fadnavis claimed that the journalist was arrested because he had exposed a letter given by the state government official to scam-accused DHFL promoters Wadhawan brothers.

The letter gave permission to the Wadhawan family and their friends to travel from Mumbai to Satara during the lockdown amid the coronavirus outbreak, Fadnavis said.

The senior BJP leader further pointed out that the case against Kulkarni was filed in Mumbai and the arrested journalist was made to travel from Osamanabad amid the COVID-19 outbreak.

“The media can be asked to clarify a negative news report but filing cases and arresting them accounts to terrorising the media,” Devendra Fadnavis said while also condemning the ‘grilling’ of Republic TV Editor-in-chief Arnab Goswami for 12 hours by the Mumbai Police.

Those speaking out against the current Maharashtra government on social media are also being harassed, Fadnavis claimed while requesting Governor Koshyari to intervene.

The former Maharashtra CM also alleged that the state government was curtailing the distribution of newspapers in containment areas in the name of a health threat. “We urge you to intervene and seek a response from the state government over these issues,” Fadnavis told the Governor.

Meanwhile, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Raut took a dig at the Maharashtra Governor for the delay in Uddhav Thackeray’s nomination as an MLC, as recommended by the state cabinet. Raut said that the governor’s image is getting maligned because BJP leaders are frequently meeting him at Raj Bhavan as if he was still a leader of the saffron party.
