Communist Party of India (Marxist) MLA Vinod Nikole on Monday met Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari to register opposition to the eco-sensitive zones in Pune and Thane district. The meeting was held at Raj Bhavan in Mumbai.

A delegation of All India Kisan Sabha (AIKS) led by CPI(M) MLA Vinod Nikole met the Governor and opposed the eco-sensitive zones. The Union government in August declared Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary in Pune district and Tansa Wildlife Sanctuary in Thane district as eco-sensitive zones.

The Union government’s move came to preserve the wildlife corridors. However, the Adivasi communities have objected to the notification by the central government. Therefore, the AIKS delegation insisted upon the stringent and speedy implementation of the Forest Rights Act (FRA).

In this meeting, the CPI(M) MLA also raised the issue of the thoroughly “false and baseless” charges made by Delhi Police in connection with the Delhi Riots Case. Nikole, the lone communist MLA in Maharashtra, alleged that the Delhi Police was acting at the behest of the central government against CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury and four others.

The Governor had to assure the delegation that no action would be taken against Yechury and others.

Among those in the AIKS delegation were Natha Shingade, Vishwanath Nigale, Ashok Pekari, Somnath Nirmal, Raju Ghode and Kiran Lohakare.

On Sunday night, the special cell of Delhi Police arrested former Jawaharlal Nehru (JNU) student Dr. Umar Khalid under Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA) implicating him in the Delhi Riots Case. Khalid was sent to 10-day custody under Delhi Police by a Delhi court on Monday.
