Maharashtra has been witnessing a sharp surge in cases of coronavirus infection since February. Despite lockdown-like restrictions in place across the state, the daily number of cases in the state did not observe any downward trend. Hence, deputy CM Ajit Pawar on Friday has warned of a complete lockdown in Maharashtra.

He said if people don't adhere to the currently imposed COVID-19 restrictions then they might have to impose a lockdown like last year.

While talking about the shortage of Remdesivir injections in the state, Pawar said relatives of coronavirus-infected patients, who are admitted in private hospitals, are insisting doctors arrange the medicine regardless of infection's severity. "I request doctors to use Remdesivir only in critical cases and needn't do anything to arrange it. We are working on that," he added.

These statements came after Ajit Pawar chaired a review meeting last week on the COVID-19 situation in the state. After the meeting, he said the issue of beds, oxygen, Remdesivir injections, a key medicine in the treatment of the infection, were discussed.

Moreover, on Saturday, April 17, Mumbai Mayor Kishori Pednekar also mentioned that a "complete lockdown" should be imposed in Mumbai due to the raging pandemic. "I think a complete lockdown should be imposed looking at the current COVID-19 situation," she added.

In addition, Pednekar stated that 95 per cent of Mumbaikars are adhering to COVID-19 restrictions but the remaining five per cent are a big worry as they are causing problems to others with their behaviour.
