Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis on Tuesday raised strong objection over the decision taken by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to allow Popular Front of India (PFI) to facilitate the burial of deceased COVID-19 Muslim patients.

Taking to Twitter, Fadnavis questioned the stand of Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on the nomination of PFI to bury COVID-19 Muslim victims. Fadnavis alleged that PFI is recognised for anti-national and anti-social activities and the organisation was likely to be banned in certain states.

“Whenever there is suspected COVID-19 death/COVID-19 death of Muslim patients, all Hospital in charge are directed to inform the following four coordinators from Popular Front India, in addition to local Police Station and local Medical Officer of Health (MOH),” the order dated May 18 by the civic body read.

The order also listed the name and contact details of four coordinators from the Task Force Team from PFI which has been allowed to facilitate the burial of Muslim dead bodies. The order has been signed by Executive Health Officer Padmaja Keskar.

Fadnavis, former Maharashtra Chief Minister, expressed shocked over BMC’s giving legitimacy to PFI while asking the Chief Minister to clear his stand and take strong action.

“Shocked to know that BMC giving legitimacy to an organisation like Popular Front of India (PFI), allegedly known for anti-national & anti-social activities. Hon CM Uddhav Thackeray ji do you agree to this? If not, will you take strong action? (sic),” Fadnavis tweeted.

The Uttar Pradesh police earlier sought a ban on the PFI after reports claimed that they were involved in the statewide protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC).
