ED Summons Maharashtra Chief Secretary Sitaram Kunte

This has reportedly been undertaken in regards to answering questions related to ex-Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s investigation.

The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has issued a summon to Maharashtra Chief Secretary, Sitaram Kunte to appear before it on Thursday, November 25, reported news agency ANI. Kunte, however, stated that he will not be able to join the probe owing to certain cabinet meetings.

This has reportedly been undertaken in regards to answering questions related to ex-Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh’s investigation, transfer and postings of state police officers.

The ED is investigating corruption and bribery allegations against Deshmukh. The agency believes that Deshmukh collected funds from bar owners in Mumbai through Sachin Waze, the now-dismissed cop.

Additionally, Deshmukh is being investigated for the transfer and posting of police officers in light of money. On November 2, Deshmukh was arrested by the ED and is presently in judicial custody.

The summon by ED comes amidst the Maharashtra government’s recommendation to extend the tenure of Kunte. He is slated to retire on November 30.

According to reports, Kunte is believed to have efficiently managed the second wave of COVID-19. Sources claim that he has a good bond with Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray. Amid the fear of the third wave of coronavirus, sources alleged that Thackeray wants to accord Kunte an extension.
