In a major setback to Congress, senior party leader Kripashankar Singh will join the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday. Kripashankar Singh submitted his resignation to Congress General Secretary Mallikarjun Kharge.

There is a possibility that Singh may join BJP along with another senior Congress leader Harshvardhan Patil who also announced his decision to join the saffron party on September 10. Earlier, Congress leader Urmila Matondkar also resigned over "in-house politics".

This exodus of senior leaders from Congress comes ahead of the upcoming Maharashtra assembly elections which are scheduled in mid-October this year. It was informed earlier that the State Election Commission (SEC) can announce the election dates after Ganesh Chaturthi.

Moreover, his difference with former Mumbai Congress President Sanjay Nirupam is an open secret.
