In the aftermath of the controversial statement made by Maharashtra Governor B S Koshyari wherein he remarked that if Gujaratis and Rajasthanis were excluded from Mumbai then there wouldn't be any money left in the city and it would no longer be the financial capital of India, on Monday, August 1, he tendered an apology.

According to reports, Koshyari in a statement elaborated on how while addressing a gathering on the development of Mumbai, he felt he committed an error while eulogizing the contribution of members of certain communities, in the past three years, the people of Maharashtra have given him immense love and affection.

He added that he has tried his best to ameliorate the prestige of Maharashtra and the Marathi language. However, on that day, he inadvertently committed a mistake. He said he is confident that the citizens of Maharashtra will show their big hearts and forgive him, the humble servant of the people. He voiced that he can never imagine insulting the people of Maharashtra which has a great tradition and history of saints.

Based on accounts, while leaders of the opposition have been criticizing Koshyari for his statements, Maharashtra CM Eknath Shinde and Deputy CM Devendra Fadnavis have distanced themselves from the Governor by mentioning that they do not agree with his statement.
