The state government has once again come under attack by an opposition leader over Bakra Eid, also known as Eid al-Adha. BJP leader and President of Maharashtra State Muslim Khatik Samaj Haji Arfat Shaikh has expressed his displeasure over the ban on public celebrations of Bakra Eid.

Earlier, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray had said that keeping the coronavirus crisis in mind, all the public celebration of festivals should be avoided this year and can instead be celebrated in a bigger way next year. The CM appealed to the Muslim citizens in the state to not go to the market to buy goats for the Bakra Eid. Last week, the state government issued guidelines for celebrating the festival on July 31 and August 1 amid the pandemic.

According to the guidelines, citizens will have to offer namaz prayers at home instead of going to the mosques and also purchase sacrificial animals online or over the phone. Considering the lockdown norms and restrictions, the guidelines also urged that 'Qurbani' or animal sacrifice ritual should preferably be done symbolically.

Following this, BJP leader Haji Arfat Shaikh expressed his displeasure and said that buying goats online for sacrifice is not the proper way of sacrificial rituals. Criticizing the Uddhav Thackeray-led government he said that when the state was under the BJP rule, all the party leaders and those associated with festival business were called to a sit-down meeting with the Khatik Samaj.

Shaikh further alleged that some Muslim leaders are just fooling the Muslim society to earn their bread and butter. He also said that if the state government does not listen to the urges by the community, they will strongly protest this decision.
