As Manoj Jarange is on a hunger strike demanding reservation for the Maratha community, NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal has issued a stern warning that if the Marathas are granted reservation under the Other Backward Classes (OBC) category, the OBC community will challenge the decision in court the very next day.

Jarange has demanded that all Marathas be recognised as Kunbis, arguing that since every Maratha is essentially a Kunbi, they should be issued Kunbi certificates and granted 10% reservation under the OBC category.

In this context, a meeting of OBC leaders was held in Mumbai under the leadership of Chhagan Bhujbal. Speaking about the outcome of the meeting, Bhujbal stated that the Maratha community is not socially backward but rather progressive. He emphasised that the Supreme Court has, on multiple occasions, ruled that the Maratha and Kunbi communities cannot be merged. Despite this, there is a persistent demand to issue Kunbi certificates directly to Marathas.

Bhujbal also mentioned that he and other OBC leaders met with then-Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and presented the Supreme Court’s previous rulings and judgments related to reservation. He warned that if the government decides to issue Kunbi certificates directly to the Maratha community based on Jarange’s demands, the OBC community will immediately move to court to oppose the decision.
