The inter-ministerial centre team (IMCT), deputed by the centre to inspect the efforts or preparedness of Maharashtra to tackle the coronavirus outbreak, has recommended an increase in the capacity of quarantine facility in Mumbai.

Maharashtra Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed that the IMCT has suggested that the number of beds for quarantine facility should be increased to 2,000 from the current 1,200 beds. Reason being, the recent hike in the number of COVID-19 cases in the city.

The ICMT arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday for a two-day visit to check the state efforts in implementing the lockdown measure along with inspecting the supply of essentials and safety of healthcare professionals.

Rajesh Tope further informed that the central team has also asked the state government to provide minimum oxygen supply to patients undergoing treatment, as it will help the patients in case of breathing distress.

As the per recommendations made by the committee, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has been asked to set out for more beds. Tope informed that the civic body has also been asked to increase testing across the city. Tents can also be installed in open grounds, he added.

The ICMT visited Dharavi on Wednesday and was accompanied by Rajesh Tope and officials from the state and BMC health department. The team visited quarantine facility at Dharavi transit camp. Of over 3,400 cases in Mumbai, 180 have been reported from Dharavi which the slum-dominating area in the city.

In a surprise, the centre on Tuesday deputed two teams to inspect the implementation of lockdown measures in Mumbai and Pune.

After inspecting the Maharashtra government’s efforts to tackle the coronavirus pandemic, the inter-ministerial teams have issued necessary directions to the state and will submit reports to the Centre.

The centre has designated six inter-ministerial teams - two each for Maharashtra and West Bengal and one each for Madhya Pradesh and Rajasthan. The reason to constitute such teams was taken in the view of the increasing cases in cities like Mumbai and Pune as they have become the hotbeds for the coronavirus outbreak.
