Shiv Sena and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alliance have fielded senior leader Gajanan Kirtikar from Mumbai North-West Lok Sabha constituency while the Congress has named Sanjay Nirupam to contest from the same. Kirtikar is the sitting Shiv Sena MP from the North-West parliamentary constituency.

Shiv Sena leader Gajanan Kirtikar is well known and a veteran leader of the party who had good relations with Shiv Sena founder Bal Thackeray. In the 2014 national election, Kirtikar won the seat under the influence of Modi wave and defeated late Congress leader Gurudas Kamat.

In the general election of the year 1999 and 2004, Congress’ Sunil Dutt remained elected as an MP from the constituency. However, after the 2004 general elections, the seat was delimited which changed the demography and the nature of polling. Later, Gurudas Kamat was elected as an MP from this new constituency.

Loyal to Shiv Sena

Kirtikar has a history to remain loyal to Shiv Sena from the start of his political career. From the year 1990 to 2009, the senior Shiv Sena leader remained an MLA from Malad assembly legislative constituency. In 2014, Kirtikar defeated Kamat by a margin of almost 1.83 lakh votes.

Gajanan Kirtikar is one of the few Shiv Sena leaders who received the support from the north Indian community. In Kirtikar’s constituency, there is a huge vote bank of north Indian voters.
