Appointed as Mumbai Congress President
After getting elected as an MP from Mumbai North constituency in 2009, Nirupam lost the succeeding 2014 national election amid ‘Modi wave’ in the country to Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Gopal Shetty. However, the senior Congress leader was appointed as Mumbai Congress chief after the 2014 general elections.
Under the leadership of Nirupam, Congress performed badly in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) election and the clashes in the city’s party unit emerged openly after Deora expressed his disappointment on social media.
Controversies
Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam has never escaped controversies and troubles because of his remarks on several issues. When Nirupam questioned the surgical strike after Uri terror attacks, the Congress was in a huge mess. Nirupam has also been criticised heavily for calling Prime Minister Narendra Modi an “illiterate.”
During the 2012 Gujarat assembly election, Nirupam’s remarks against BJP leader Smriti Irani got him into huge trouble. Nirupam taunted, “In just a few days after joining politics, you (Smriti Irani) have become a political analyst. Until now, you were dancing on TV screens.”
For his remarks, Nirupam was criticised by several political parties.

After Milind Deora replaced Sanjay Nirupam as Mumbai Congress President, the party high-command decided to field Nirupam from city's North-West Lok Sabha seat. With the constituency holding huge amount of north Indian voters, there are chances that Sanjay Nirupam can perish. However, Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) - who are campaigning against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Prime Minister Narendra Modi - has refused to campaign for Nirupam. This can influence the Marathi voters in the constituency.
