The Narendra Modi-led government has announced the new guidelines for lockdown 5.0 which will begin from June 1. The fifth phase of the nationwide lockdown is being called as ‘unlock 1’ as the focus will be on re-opening the economy.

In its guidelines for lockdown 5.0, the Union Home Ministry said that a complete lockdown will remain till June 30 in contained zones across the country. However, the restrictions imposed in other places will be lifted gradually after the lockdown 4.0 ends on May 31.

On Saturday, the centre informed that all activities which were not allowed earlier will be operational in areas outside COVID-19 containment zones and this will be done in a phased manner. The first phase of unlocking will be initiated from June 8 allowing religious places and hotels, restaurants and shopping malls to operate.

The importance of social distancing, wearing masks and maintaining personal and social hygiene has also been highlighted by the central government. However, the government has restricted opening of international flights, gyms and large gatherings of any nature.

Karnataka and Wes Bengal have released the guidelines for 'unlock 1.0' while other states will issue the same today. However, with the number of COVID-19 cases crossing the 65,000-mark, the Maharashtra government is unlikely to lift restrictions in one go in red zones like Mumbai, Pune and other areas with higher cases.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray earlier hinted that he was not in favour of lifting lockdown restrictions in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR), Pune as COVID-19 cases could rise in these hotspot regions. Maharashtra is likely to continue with the restrictions in the view of COVID-19 cases being double in the past 15 days.

However, the revised guidelines for lockdown 5.0 are likely to be released by the Maharashtra government on Sunday. The local train services in Mumbai are also unlikely to resume despite Uddhav Thackeray’s demands of its resumption for essential workers.

The Maharashtra government will also decide on reopening of temples, restaurants and malls in the state which the centre has already allowed from June 8. However, sources have informed that the Uddhav Thackeray government might allow industries outside containment zones even in Mumbai and Pune.
