Due to a spurt in COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra, the Budget session has been curtailed. The Budget session of the Maharashtra legislature will be held from March 1 and 10, instead of four weeks.

The announcement was made by a business advisory committee in its meeting on Thursday.

The session will start on March 1 with the Governor's address to the two houses while the Budget will be tabled on March 8.

This time the meeting was chaired by the Speaker of the Legislative Council Ramraje Naik-Nimbalkar. Deputy Speaker Dr. Neelam Gorhe, Vice President Narhari Jirwal, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Council Praveen Darekar, Leader of Opposition in the Legislative Assembly Devendra Fadnavis, Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Anil Parab, Members of the Cabinet, Members of the Legislative Council Advisory Committee Member, Secretary of Parliamentary Affairs Rajendra Bhagwat among others were present.

While talking to reports after a meeting of the legislature's Business Advisory Committee (BAC) parliamentary affairs minister Anil Parab, “The state government will also table supplementary demands on the first day. The house will hold a discussion on governor's speech on March 2 while the next two days are reserved for discussion on supplementary demands."

The legislature will discuss proposals of opposition parties on March 5 and some bills will also be tabled, he said. There will be no sittings on March 6 and 7 due to the weekend.

Besides, elections to the post of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly won't be held in the ensuing Budget session of the state legislature as most ministers are recovering from COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the leader of Opposition Devendra Fadnavis walked out of the advisory committee meeting and said that they did not listen to the suggestions by the opposition. The BJP, he said, has demanded that the Budget Session must be held for four weeks.

Moreover, BJP also alleged that the government was trying to curtail the session on the pretext of the coronavirus situation. However, Parab claimed that it was opposition parties that wanted a one-day session.

Parab, a minister from the Shiv Sena, claimed that the opposition suggested a one-day session due to the COVID-19 situation, "but we decided to have a ten-day session."

To prevent the spread of coronavirus infection, the RT-PCR test has been made mandatory for all dignitaries, officers, staff, security personnel before entering the Vidhan Bhavan during the convention period.

The civic body will arrange test camps at Vidhan Bhavan on February 27 and 28th February 2021 and next week on Saturday and Sunday, March 6 and 7.

No general public will not be allowed to enter the Vidhan Bhavan during the convention period. In addition, limited access will be given to ministry officials and employees. In order to maintain social distance, one seat will be arranged for the members in the House.

Members will also be given a kit with a face shield, mask, gloves and a bottle of hand sanitizer. At the entrance, thermal screening would be done for all those entering the premises.
