Maharashtra Government has decided to provide houses to the Dabbawalas of Mumbai under the Prime Minister Awas Yojana (PMAY). Deputy CM and State Finance Minister, Ajit Pawar announced the decision on Thursday.

The world-famous Dabbawalas of Mumbai provide tiffin services to office-goers with impressive efficiency. Their management expertise is taught as a case study in reputed business schools.

This decision comes after a delegation of the Dabbawala association met Ajit Pawar in Mantralaya, along with Maharashtra Labour Minister Dilip Walse-Patil. The Deputy CM assured the Dabbawalas that their demand will be fulfilled and asked the officials to devise a plan for the same.

“As most of the Dabbawalas in Mumbai hail from Pune, Ajit dada (Pawar) was aware of our demands. As Deputy CM in the previous government, he had requested then CM Prithviraj Chavan to decide on the demands of Dabbawalas. However, it did not happen,” Subhash Talekar, spokesperson of Dabbawala association told Mumbai Live.

The Dabbawalas have been demanding homes in Mumbai since 2005. Ajit Pawar has called for immediate action to resolve their housing issue. Under the PMAY, the Uddhav Thackeray-led Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government will provide homes to nearly 5,000 Dabbawalas in the city.

“This has been our demand since 2005. Like mill workers, we also want homes in Mumbai. Now that Ajit dada is the Deputy CM and Uddhavji Thackeray is the Chief Minister, our demands will be fulfilled. Before coming to power, Uddhav Thackeray had promised that we will get home if Shiv Sena comes to power. We welcome this decision,” said Talekar.

Along with this, Ajit Pawar also announced that a Mumbai Dabbawala building – ‘Dabbawala Bhavan’ - will also be constructed in the city to showcase their work.

“The expertise of the dabbawalas of Mumbai is known to the world. Many people from all across the world come to learn their skills. A Mumbai Dabbawala building will be constructed immediately to showcase their work,” said Ajit Pawar.
