Maharashtra State Energy Minister, Dr Nitin Raut, on Thursday, October 29, 2020, stated that the Mahatrans Company should use modern and new technology to improve the system. Adding more to the thought, he said that the department should consider finding innovative sources of revenue, and has guided the officials to work on a business model which uses optical fibre cable laying method on transmission lines to make the internal communication system effective. This method would also benefit the department in improving commercial use and generate revenue.

Presenting the same Dr Raut said that this approach will radically improve the transmission and help in alleviating the power distribution problems in the state. Further, this system will prove to be very beneficial in the communication sector, where customers will also be able to get the benefit of fast internet service.

Besides him, the meeting was also attended by Dinesh Waghmare, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahatrans Company, Sanjay Khandare, Chairman and Managing Director of Mahanirmiti, Ravindra Chavan, Director (Project) of Mahatrans Company, Ravindra Sawant, Director (Finance), Satish Chavan, Director of Mahavitaran and other officials.

Raut added that Mahatransco can connect a network of long lines and all the substations by laying optical fibre cable under these lines. The advantage of the speed and modern technology in the transmission messaging system will make it easier to work on maintenance and repair work, in case of a breakdown. This would also be helpful in situations like an outage faced on October 12. Understand the need and importance, Raut has directed the officials to work on this on an immediate basis.

He also pointed out that through the use of optical fibre it will be possible for Mahatrans co to provide fast internet to service providers, broadband companies and the state-wide network of Mahatrans. This business model would be helpful in finding new business and income opportunities. Officials have also been directed that the services of expert advisors should be sought for this.

Currently, the department has 86,000 transmission towers in the state using which it is possible to set up antennas for mobile service. Two experiments in the past were performed with the same model and have shown results, following which  Minister Dr Raut suggested that it should be included in its business model as well.

The need for modernization of Mahatrans' substations, transmission lines, etc. has been observed due to the power outage which occurred recently in Mumbai. The team has noted that modernization measures will have to be taken immediately by combining close planning along with medium and long term planning, and the work should be done in accordance with international standards using the best technology available at this hour.

He also addressed that immediate measures should be taken to address the problems of faulty transformers in the state, for which, the demand and supply of electricity should be properly planned at the district level. In order to ensure a smooth power supply across all sectors, future forecasting should be done at the district level and a proposal should be made immediately focusing on the same.

Experts have noted that several transformers are malfunctioning due to additional load on MSEDCL substations. In order to manage overload, officials are planning to set up small solar power projects near substations. Transmission line and other repairs should be done keeping the weather forecast in mind. The energy minister also suggested that drones should be used effectively for inspection and repair of towers as well as lines.
