In a bold move to curb gambling-related activities, the Maharashtra government has taken decisive action to ban casinos and online gambling in the state. The announcement was made by Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who emphasized the government's commitment to protect the well-being of its citizens and safeguard the interests of the youth.

Legislation to Prohibit Casinos and Online Gambling

The Maharashtra government, under the leadership of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, has recently decided to bring forth comprehensive legislation aimed at banning all forms of gambling, including casinos and online gambling platforms. The proposed legislation seeks to repeal a 30-year-old law that previously allowed casinos to operate in the state. Deputy CM Fadnavis confirmed the signing of a proposal to repeal this law, and further revealed that the new legislation will be introduced soon to effectuate the ban. This measure demonstrates the government's commitment to fostering a healthier and safer environment for its citizens.

Concerns Raised by Indian National Congress Leader

In the Legislative Assembly session on Monday, July 24, Indian National Congress (INC) leader Abhijit Wanjarri raised concerns about the rising prevalence of online gambling and rummy platforms. He called for strict restrictions on these platforms, citing their potential to cause addiction and financial hardships, particularly among the youth. Mr. Wanjarri urged the government to take appropriate measures to impose limitations on the operation and promotion of these platforms.

Opposing Perspectives on Restrictions

In response to Mr. Wanjarri's concerns, BJP leader and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis presented an opposing view, contending that the existing regulatory compliances were sufficient to govern online gaming and rummy platforms. Deputy CM Fadnavis emphasized that these platforms were operating in accordance with decisions made by the central government and that imposing additional restrictions might not be necessary. This difference in perspective highlights the complexity of the issue at hand.

Celebrity Endorsements and Youth Influence

Another point of contention raised by Mr. Wanjarri was the influence of celebrity endorsements on gambling platforms, particularly on impressionable youth. He expressed concerns about the negative impact such promotions could have on the younger generation. Mr. Wanjarri specifically mentioned celebrities like Sharad Kelkar and Manoj Bajpayee, who have been seen endorsing rummy and gambling sites. He urged the government to investigate this matter and consider restrictions on celebrity endorsements for such potentially harmful apps and sites.

Government Emphasizes Individual Responsibility

In response to the concerns regarding celebrity endorsements, Deputy CM Fadnavis cited the example of sporting legend Sachin Tendulkar, who has never promoted rummy or gaming platforms for financial gain. He emphasized that the government believes in the power of individual responsibility, and celebrities should exercise their discretion while endorsing products that may have detrimental effects on the youth and society at large.
