The Maharashtra government’s ambitious Rs 10 meal plan for the poor will reportedly start Phase 1 of its operations soon. The outlets will be set up at public places as well as district headquarters. The government will reportedly offer 18,000 meals in the first phase. As per a government resolution, the meals will not be available to people working in state establishments.

According to the food and civil supplies department, 450 subsidized thalis will be served in Mumbai and up to 1,500 thalis will be offered in the suburbs. This first phase will reportedly be a 3-month pilot project and the government has allotted Rs 6.4 crore for this purpose.

Existing business owners, particularly Khanavals, bhojanalayas, as well as NGOs can also setup meal centers as part of this scheme. Further, the government is considering opening these meal zones in bus stations, railway stations, district/government hospitals, and collectors offices. These eateries are required to have seating arrangements for at least 25 people, serving 75 to 150 thalis per day.

It is said that the cost of each meal comes down to Rs 50 in the urban regions while the cost is slightly lower at Rs 35 in the rural areas. So the government plans to reimburse contractors Rs 40 and Rs 25 per plate in urban and rural areas respectively.
