The Maharashtra Legislature secretariat has issued an order increasing the staff attendance to 50 per cent. Earlier, the attendance was 15 per cent owing to the coronavirus outbreak and the lockdown imposition. The staff has been asked to join work ahead of the monsoon session of Maharashtra legislature which is scheduled to begin on August 3.

The order has been in effect since July 13 and the staff will have to obligate to the order till July 31. Only those who have applied for leave during this period will be exempted and a roster will be prepared for the staffers, the order said.

The fear of COVID-19 spreading among the employees will remain. Plus, the monsoon makes it prone for the employees to contract the virus. All will have to take safety measures, a source informed.

The government had asked the employees to come once in a week but now the working days at the office have increased to three since the monsoon session is scheduled to begin on August 3, it informed while adding that the employees are being placed on duty via rooster system and are being called at alternate days so that there is no crowding.

According to the media reports, at least 16 employees were tested positive for the coronavirus at the legislature. Earlier, one of the clerks working inside the premises had succumbed to COVID-19.

Moreover, at least 16 Raj Bhavan staffers were tested positive for COVID-19 recently. Bhagat Singh Koshyari, the Maharashtra Governor, has meanwhile stated that he is fine, and not under self-isolation. He also added that he has tested negative for COVID-19.

The Monsoon session of the Maharashtra legislature was supposed to begin on June 22 but was postponed given the coronavirus outbreak.

As of July 15, Maharashtra has been one of the worst-hit states in India due to the coronavirus outbreak with 2,75,640 COVID-19 cases while the death toll has touched 10,928.  In Mumbai, the number of coronavirus cases has increased to 96,474 and nearly 5,467 fatalities have been reported. On Wednesday, Maharashtra reported 7,975 fresh COVID-19 cases and 223 deaths.
