Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Saturday announced that the lockdown in Maharashtra will be extended till April 30. This comes after the chief ministers of all states held a video conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

"The lockdown until April 30 will only be successful if we follow social distancing and stay at home. Else we may have to extend," Uddhav Thackeray said while addressing the citizens via social media.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a 21-day nationwide lockdown which will come to an end on April 14. However, as the number of cases for the coronavirus or COVID-19 in India is not coming down, there is no other option but to extend the lockdown.

On April 11, Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a video call with all the state chief ministers to ascertain the position in each state and to discuss the possible extension of lockdown. This was the second virtual interaction between the Chief Ministers and PM amid the coronavirus outbreak.

In this meeting, Cheif Minister Uddhav Thackeray was also a part. After the meeting, it has now been announced that the lockdown will now be extended. Even before this meeting took place given the numbers in Maharashtra, there were speculations that the lockdown will be extended till May 15.

Even before the meeting with Prime Minister, Odisha announced the extension of the lockdown. It was the first Indian state to extend the ongoing lockdown till April 30. On April 9, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik shared a video statement said that his government has decided to extend the lockdown period in Odisha.

On April 10, Punjab announced the decision to extend the lockdown till May 1. The Captain Amarinder Singh-led Punjab government took this decision at a state cabinet meeting that was held on April 10 after the state witnessed a rapid rise in the number of COVID-19 cases that has already crossed the 100-mark in the state.
