Due to heavy rains, holidays have been given to schools and colleges in the state, now a two day holiday has been announced for the monsoon session of the Legislature as well. The decision to not hold the legislature session on Monday and Tuesday (July 31 and August 1) was taken in Thursday's working advisory committee meeting. However, there is talk in political circles that Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pune is the real reason for this holiday.

Supplementary demands and approval of the Appropriation Bill are important issues for the ruling party in the monsoon session. Therefore, there was a struggle to wrap up the session on Friday itself. MLAs have returned to their constituencies due to heavy rains and floods. The reason was advanced that this affects the attendance of MLAs. However, it is understood that there is a difference of opinion among the rulers in this regard.

Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Ajit Pawar were of the opinion that it should be a full-time job. Congress' Balasaheb Thorat and NCP's Jayant Patil also opposed the winding up of the session. Thereafter, it was decided to continue the session till the scheduled date i.e. August 4 in the Legislative Assembly and Legislative Council Working Advisory Committee meetings chaired by Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narvekar and Legislative Council Deputy Speaker Neelam Gorhe respectively. However, it was decided that the work should be conducted only for three days from Wednesday to Friday, with Monday-Tuesday as a holiday.

Why is Monday off?

It is said that MLAs have been given leave so that they can go to their constituencies and deal with the flood situation. However, the question is being asked why there are two more days when Saturday and Sunday are already holidays. As Prime Minister Narendra Modi is in Pune on Tuesday, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde, both deputy chief ministers, ministers and ruling MLAs will be there. This will affect the legislative work. If the work is closed only on Tuesday, most of the MLAs will avoid coming to Mumbai for a day. That is why there is talk of giving both days off.

“The ruling party was trying to wrap up the monsoon session on Friday itself. But important issues like rain, water, and heavy rains are pertinent issues that are faced by the state. This needs to be discussed. On the demand of the opposition, it was decided to hold the session till August 4. There will be no work for two days on the occasion of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Pune”, said Balasaheb Thorat, Congress Party leader.
