The Maha Vikas Aghadi government has announced Rs 1,300 crore for higher and technical education while also setting aside Rs 2,525 crore for school and sports education in the state. This is expected to significantly improve the quality of education in the state.

The government will focus on skill development as well as new model schools as part of this plan while offering an increased focus on sports. This budget will also help the youth with self-employment, it is said.

Under this plan, over 1,500 schools are expected to be transformed over a period of four years, Deputy CM and Finance Minister Ajit Pawar said. The government is using the Vabalewadi Zilla Parishad model for this particular plan.

The government has so far undertaken multiple infrastructure projects including the modernization of Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC) bus terminals across the state.

The government is touting this as a “populist” budget aimed at the common people. However, the 2020-21 state budget also pitched an increase in the price of fuel including petrol and diesel. While infrastructure is expected to be significantly bolstered under the proposed budget for the year, it’s clear that citizens will also have to bear the brunt of rising prices in some sectors.

Spending on education and youth development, including sports, is certainly welcome news for the youngsters of Maharashtra. The state’s budget also announced building 40,000 km of roads towards the rural road development scheme, while urban roads will also receive a shot in the arm thanks to a proposed allocation of Rs 1,000 crore.
