Maharashtra's newly elected Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi demanding to make Marathi as an 'elite language'. Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray had broken his two-decades-long alliance with the Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP) and has joined hands with Congress and Nationalist Congress Party (NCP).

Shiv Sena has demanded to grant Marathi as an 'elite language' in the past as well. Speaking at the Maharashtra Assembly last week, Thackeray mentioned that the BJP was no different and cited its coalitions with Mamata Banerjee, Ram Vilas Paswan in the past and more recently the PDP in J&K.
