Mumbai Police on Monday, May 2, said that it will investigate and press charges against MNS chief Raj Thackeray for his speech in Aurangabad. The cops are likely to book Raj Thackeray as multiple violations have been found.

This development comes a day after Raj Thackeray addressed a public mega rally on Maharashtra Day during an event at Sanskrutik Mandal Maidan Aurangabad.

Amid the ongoing political row over the use of loudspeakers at mosques, in his speech, Thackeray reiterated that if loudspeakers are not taken down then the Hanuman Chalisa would be played with double volume compared to Azan from May 4.

“Today is the first day of Maharashtra (Maharashtra Day). I won't listen on the 4th day from now. Wherever we will see a loudspeaker, we will also chant Hanuman Chalisa in front of the loudspeaker in double volume,” he further stated.

He also warned of more rallies in Marathwada, Vidarbha and other cities as well.

Additionally, he urged to take down loudspeakers outside even temples, but only after the ones in mosques are removed. Elaborating further he stated that this is a social and not a religious question. “I have no wish to cause riots in Maharashtra. Loudspeakers are not part of your religion [Islam]. It is now or never,” he added.

On the other hand, on Thursday, April 28, Raj Thackeray praised Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath for removing loudspeakers from all religious places in that state. He also prayed at the feet of Goddess Jagdambadevi and expressed hope that good sense would prevail even in Maharashtra.

This controversial issue erupted after MNS chief had launched a campaign to impose a blanket ban on loudspeakers from mosques in the state by May 3, or his activists would blare out Hanuman Chalisa at double volumes there.
