In the aftermath of the Maharashtra government submitting data on the Other Backward Class (OBC) to the Maharashtra State Commission for Backward Classes (MSCBC), on Saturday, January 5, the panel met again and reportedly finalized the interim report. Based on accounts, the report was anticipated to be given to the state government on Sunday, January 6.

According to narratives, government officials are of the opinion that the report will be important since it will be presented by the Maharashtra government in the Supreme Court for the hearing on February 8. They will be doing so to seek the restoration of the OBC quota in the local body polls.

Previously, last week, the government had given the data to the MSCBC and asked it to provide an interim report promptly. Earlier in January, the Supreme Court had asked the government to provide data on the OBCs to the MSCBC. They did so in order to examine its correctness as well as recommend its presentations in the local body elections.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had struck the legal provision that accorded 27 per cent political reservation since it exceeded that 50 per cent cap. Following this, the state promulgated an ordinance to amend two legislations, ensuring 27 per cent reservation for the OBC candidates.
